Third Avenue United Church back on the market

SASKATOON – The Third Avenue United Church is back on the market.

The church first went up for sale last July but a bid from not-for-profit group Third Avenue Centre was not approved by the River Bend Presbytery.

The church’s board and the governing body then met to iron out discrepancies.

“Since March, we’ve been in discussion with River Bend to find a way of going back out to achieve the goals of preserving the building, allowing us as a congregation to stay in a long-term lease,” said Peter Barnacle, chair of the Third Avenue United Church board.

“We hit a bump in the road earlier this spring, but that has now been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction,” said Rev. Michael Webster, chair of River Bend Presbytery.

With the differences resolved, a new request for proposal has been issued with preference given for the sale of the church to a community based organization.

“We will ensure that this 100-year-old building is preserved and used for the enjoyment of the citizens of Saskatoon and area,” said Barnacle.

Third Avenue Centre [TAC] says they will be making another offer for the downtown landmark.

“We are confident we have addressed and will be able to remove the areas of concern that were in our previous proposal,” said TAC Artistic Director Mark Turner.

Sale of the church must be completed by Sept. 30.
