EDMONTON- For the first time in the city’s history, Edmonton Elections is offering advance vote locations at post-secondary institutions.

Students and staff at NAIT were offered the opportunity to cast their ballot on campus between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

School officials say getting the polling station set up at NAIT was fairly simple and it makes it a lot easier for students and staff to cast their ballot.

“It’s a great opportunity for students and staff and those in the community to vote. It’s an area that has, obviously, a higher population density during the day with all the students here and in the surrounding area. So it’s a good chance to give that advanced vote to those that appreciate it,” said Daryn Rainer, vice president of the NAIT Student Association.

“It’s tough to plan around that day, especially because it’s midterm season right now and next week as well. Transportation’s always a challenge for a lot of these students,” he added.

Similar advance polling stations will be set up between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m at MacEwan University’s downtown campus Wednesday and the University of Alberta Thursday.

Advance voting in Edmonton began last Tuesday. Over the first five days of advance voting for the 2013 election, 8,438 Edmontonians cast their ballot. During the 2010 election, 6,198 voters cast their ballot in the first week of advance voting.
