PENTICTON — One of B.C.’s newest M-L-A’s has paid thousands of dollars for his jump to provincial politics, but former Penticton mayor Dan Ashton says his conscience would not allow anything less.
When he announced his intention to run for the Liberals in the May provincial election, Ashton — who was Penticton’s mayor at the time — promised to pay for the cost of a byelection, if he won.

He officially handed over a $32,000 check to council last night.
Ashton served as a councillor or mayor of Penticton since 1999 and says he couldn’t force taxpayers to assume the byelection bill — although, of the several municipal politicians elected in May, he is the only one to make the repayment offer.
