Dozens of Calgary businesses reopen after the flood

The outlook looked bleak for many Calgary businesses after the June flood shut them down, but almost six months later, many are reopening.

Chinatown in particular was hard hit – the flood forced the closure of 45 restaurants.

Owner and chef John Lau is now back doing what he loves, cooking in the kitchen at the Golden Inn.

“It took us a long time,” says Lau’s son, Raymond. “The insurance was able to help us out, which was a miracle, but we just opened about a month ago and business has been awesome; everyone has been really supportive.”

The flood also forced the closure of many businesses in the Mission area, and while some have reopened, others still haven’t.

Employees at WURST on 4 Street S.W. are working around the clock to prepare for the restaurant’s grand reopening on December 18.

The Joyce on 4th pub is planning to open its doors in the New Year while Earl’s Tin Palace will reopen on February 25th, after an eight-month shutdown.
