SASAKATOON – Hundreds of Saskatchewan indoor rinks are taking advantage of nearly $1.6 million of grants this winter season.

Funding from the provincial government will be distributed to 520 facilities throughout Saskatchewan.

The Wall government announced in September that the Community Rink Affordability Grant would run for a second year after its initial success in 2012.

“We’ve heard from people directly involved with local rinks that the funds are helping,” said Mike Powell, the president of the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association.

“They’re allowing rink owners to hire caretakers, keep the rinks open longer, and repair and upgrade facilities.”

The $2,500 per rink grant helps communities, non-profits, schools and First Nations help keep ice surfaces open and running smoothly.
