Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Calgary and surrounding area on Tuesday as large, dark clouds accompanied by thunder, lighting, hail and heavy rain could be seen descending on the city from the west.

Calgarians are keeping a nervous eye to the sky Tuesday after Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the city of Calgary and areas of Rocky View County just west and east of the city.The national weather agency said it was tracking a severe thunderstorm that developed west of the city and was capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to toonie sized hail and heavy rain.

Anyone outside when the storm hit was advised to seek shelter or protection from flying debris and hail.

Most of southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan was also put under a severe thunderstorm watch on Tuesday.
