SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Huskies women’s hockey team carried the momentum for a second place regular season finish into a semifinal win over UBC last weekend.

Now they’ll meet their rivals from Regina, with the Canada West championship on the line.

“Obviously they are on fire right now, but we’re on fire too,” said Kaitlin Willoughby, Canada west rookie of the year.

“We can’t take them lightly. We’ve beat them but when the puck drops on Friday its any ones game.”

What makes the Huskies journey to the conference championship all the more impressive is the fact that team captain Cami Wooster is the only fifth year on the squad.

“I’ve always said right from the get go that we are young, but we are good,” claims Steve Kook, the conference’s coach of the year.

“We didn’t really have to say anything to them, they just sort of realized it and as a group they gelled really well.”

Despite their youth, the Huskies are hosting the Canada west championship for the first time in team history.

They also have an opportunity to win the programs first conference title.

Team captain Cami Wooster is excited for the opportunity.

“Honestly it was our goal from the start of the year. We knew we had a lot of work to do and were a young team but we came together as a team at the right time.”

Game one of the best-of-three series with the University of Regina Cougars goes Friday night at Rutherford Rink.
