2 Calgary men accused of tossing burning bags of propane-filled balloons from high-rise

Police have charged two men accused of dropping burning bags of balloons filled with propane from a southwest high rise apartment Sunday night.

Neighbours across the street called police after watching the pair launch the burning bags from a 10th floor balcony of a building in the 800 block of 6th Avenue S.W. shortly before 9 p.m.

When police arrived, they discovered the men were lighting small bags of balloons filled propane and lighting them with a candle before dropping them to the ground below.

One neighbour, who does not want to be identified, was out on her balcony in a neighouring apartment building, watching the whole thing.

"My husband had the video camera and I had our camera. I put the zoom lens on ,focused in, and realized they had a propane canister. They were piercing it with a sword and were trying to drop lit matches into it to make a propane bomb to throw into traffic".

“It was a fairly spectacular and stupid stunt,” said duty inspector Paul Stacey.

Police seized a toy pellet gun and a sword the men had been waving as they yelled at passersby.

The men, ages 23 and 26, are charged with multiple counts of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

The arson unit is also investigating.

Alcohol was a factor, police say.
