Suspect in Brentwood stabbing knew at least one person at party

CALGARY- 22-year-old Matthew de Grood went to a party in Brentwood on Tuesday, because he knew at least one person, a family friend.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, the Calgary Police Service provided an update on a stabbing in Brentwood where five young people were killed.

De Grood has been charged with five counts of first degree murder in connection with the deaths of Kaitlin Perras, Jordan Segura, Zackariah Rathwell, Josh Hunt and Lawrence Hong.

Kevin Brookwell with CPS said that de Grood knew a family friend at the party where students were celebrating the end of university classes.

Brookwell did not say whether de Grood knew any of the five victims personally, but confirmed at least two of the five victims lived at the rental property where the deadly stabbings occurred.

De Grood is currently being held in custody of the Calgary Remand Centre.
