WINNIPEG – Police and firefighters evacuated homes in Charleswood on Wednesday morning after a car rammed a home, cutting a gas line.
“This was strictly precautionary … in case there was an explosion,” said Capt. Lorne Heinrichs of Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic 18 Station.
Fire crews responded to a call to 783 Buckingham Rd. at about 4:30 a.m. and approximately 10 homes were evacuated. Residents were allowed to return home within an hour.
“The meter was severed from the wall,” Heinrichs said. “We’ve managed to shut it off.”
Some elderly residents were placed in ambulances to keep them safe and warm, Heinrichs said.
