WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government has chosen the walleye as the province’s official fish.
The plains bison has been deemed the provincial mammal and big bluestem is to be the provincial grass, the province announced Thursday.

Conservation Minister Gord Mackintosh said the decisions follow public input and will help promote environmental protection.
The walleye is already an official fish in other jurisdictions, such as Minnesota and Saskatchewan.
The provincial symbols will be made official through a bill being introduced in the legislature.
