REGINA – If the case goes to trial, it will be up to a jury to decide the fate of two Saskatchewan Roughriders facing assault charges.
Dwight Anderson, 32, and Taj Smith, 30, were back in person at Regina Provincial Court on Wednesday morning for the first time since they were charged in September 2013.

A two-day preliminary hearing got underway to determine what evidence will be used during a trial. Lawyers for the pair elected to be tried before a Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury.
Anderson and Smith were charged following an incident on the Dewdney Avenue bar strip in August 2013, when a man was beaten and left with head injuries.

A third Roughrider, Eron Riley, was also arrested, but those charges have since been stayed.
Details of Wednesday’s hearing are under a publication ban.
No date has been set for the trial.
