Former hockey player accused of robbery at convenience store cleared of charges

CLARENVILLE, N.L. – A 24-year-old Newfoundland man, once touted as a top NHL prospect, was found not guilty today of holding up a convenience store last year.

Daniel Ryder was charged with robbery, being disguised with intent of committing a crime and theft under $5,000 following an armed robbery in his hometown of Bonavista on Jan. 5, 2010.

Ryder, whose brother Michael won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins this year, was once touted as a promising hockey player with a potential NHL career.

He was a playoff MVP with the Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes in 2005-06, and has played professionally in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League.

Shortly after Ryder’s arrest, the RCMP said a man entered the convenience store carrying a shopping bag.

Police said the man told the lone cashier he had a gun and demanded cigarettes.
