SASKATOON – It was a close call for a family spending time on the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon Tuesday evening after something went wrong at the boat launch.
A truck backed up too far and was taken by the current.
Two children and two women were trying to escape from the truck and a family who saw the incident unfold jumped into action.
“Every time they put it into park, the truck would go further back and then all of the sudden they couldn’t do anything about it,” said Randi Thiessen.

“It went to the point where the back was just starting to float and it went in.”
Thiessen’s husband Ryan dove into the water to help.
“The one kid and one girl were just floating in the water so my husband dov e in, grabbed the kid, brought it to me in my boat and then the other girl jumped out and they all kind of grabbed on to it,” said Thiessen.

“It was a pretty intense situation.”
By the time the water rescue team arrived, everyone had made it to shore.
The truck was submerged approximately 20 feet from shore and the team assisted tow truck operators in recovering the vehicle from the river.
There were no injuries.
