TORONTO – Wildlife volunteers and firefighters managed to bring a koala back from the dead after performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the injured marsupial.
According to Australia’s Ten Eyewitness News, the young koala scurried up a tree after being struck by a vehicle in Melbourne.
Video of the rescue shows firefighters dropping the marsupial from the tree to waiting wildlife volunteers below.
“We believe it actually passed away, either in its journey down [from the tree] or from the injuries he received,” Fire Captain Sean Curtain told the news station.
Rescuers began to perform CPR on the lifeless koala and a short time later the little animal began to grunt, breathing on its own.
The marsupial, now named Sean after the fire captain, is said to be doing well.
