OTTAWA – Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird addressed the United Nations Security Council on the ongoing crisis in Iraq Friday.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry invited Baird to address the meeting of the UN’s most powerful body.
Baird reiterated Canada’s support of Iraq in its fight against ISIS (also known as the Islamic State) militants, and called on all nations to take action against what he called the growing threat of ISIS.

Baird travelled to Iraq earlier this month, meeting leaders of the country’s central government in Baghdad before travelling to the country’s Kurdish north.

Baird and two opposition MPs visited a Kurdish Peshmerga combat bunker about one kilometre from a village occupied by about 150 fighters from ISIS.
Canada has committed 69 special forces advisers to assist the Iraqi forces, and has contributed two military transport planes that are delivering guns and ammunition to the Kurdishforces.
