EDMONTON — Thousands of Edmontonians filled the streets with pink Sunday morning for the annual CIBC Run for the Cure.
About 10,000 people were in attendance for the event, which raises funds for breast cancer research, education and advocacy initiatives.
“We’re just so glad to have so many Edmontonians here supporting the great cause towards a future without breast cancer,” said Amanda Leblanc, a spokesperson for Edmonton’s Run for the Cure. “Everybody’s wearing pink, they’re all rallying to support anybody who has been affected by breast cancer.”
Katherine Chan is one of those people. She’s been cancer-free for four and a half years and says it’s amazing to see the growing support for the event.
“I almost want to cry when I see everybody here because I’ve met so many people already today that are survivors and I approach survivors just so that I can see if there’s anything I can do to help them, because sometimes you don’t have the support.

“The community, that’s my life; that is what I live for is the community, giving back. That’s why I’ve been around for a long time and will stick around for even longer.”

According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, one in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and one in 29 will die of the disease.
The Run for the Cure, which was held in several cities across Canada Sunday, is the largest single-day fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Last year’s run in Edmonton raised $1.68 million.
