WATCH: Firefighters rush to save hundreds of piglets after overturned truck accident

WATCH: Hundreds of piglets were rescued in a nearly six-hour-long operation Thursday night after a truck hauling the animals overturned in Indianapolis.

TORONTO – Hundreds of piglets had to be saved in the middle of an Indiana highway after a transport truck carrying them overturned.

First responders from the Wayne Township Fire Department released a video Friday showing the spill on Interstate 74.

“Crews racing against time to save as many animals as possible,” the fire department posted on Twitter.

According to fire officials, approximately 700 of the 2058 piglets in the truck were killed.

Rescue efforts took approximately three hours for a host of firefighters to bring the surviving swine to safety.

WWBT reports that the piglets were being transferred from an Iowa farm to a new home in North Carolina.

But until they reach their new home, the piglets will be staying at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

“Pigs have all arrived safely at the IN State Fairgrounds,” the fire department said in another Tweet.
