Another phase of the Target Corporation’s plans to enter Canada is now complete.
The popular American discount retailer, nicknamed Targét, announced back in January it would spend $1.83-billion to take over many Zellers locations in Canada.
“We will be running all Zellers stores through 2011 and into 2012, where select stores will be closed and then the stores renovated and reopened as Target stores,” said Richard Baker, chairman and chief executive of Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC).
Target’s move into Canada doesn’t mean Zellers, a subsidary of HBC, will vanish completely from the Canadian retail landscape. In a press release, HBC says it will “review its options for these locations.”
Stores that Target doesn’t acquire could either remain Zellers or become another retailer.
Target has sold 39 Zellers leases to main rival Walmart. Those stores are expected to become Walmarts in late 2012.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to bring more Walmart stores to Canadians across the country,” said David Cheesewright, Walmart Canada’s president and CEO.
Target says it plans to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada, with the first opening in March 2013, after extensive renovations that will last six to nine months. The company says the renovation of each location will cost, on average, $10 to $11 million.
