REGINA – Health officials in Saskatchewan say cases of shigella have more than tripled this year.
Deputy medical officer of health Dr. Saqib Shahab says normally there are between 10 to 15 cases of shigella a year.

This year, there have been 50 cases reported.
Symptoms of being infected with shigella include stomach pain, fever and diarrhea.
Shahab said it’s primarily affecting children, and recommends parents or caregivers ensure they wash their hands after using the toilet.
He also says children should stay away from school or daycare until symptoms have ended.
