Evacuation order lifted for 135 Halifax-area homes below damaged dam

HALIFAX – Hundreds of residents who were told to evacuate their homes below a Halifax-area dam on Saturday have been told they can return.

Halifax Water says the evacuation at 8 a.m. Saturday was necessary in order to complete emergency maintenance work on a fish ladder adjoining the Lake Major dam.

The city says the repairs have been completed and residents of about 135 homes were told they can return at 5 p.m Saturday.

They say crews have placed large rocks at the base of the dam near the fish ladder and reinforced the fish ladder itself by filling it in with more rocks.
