WINNIPEG – Craig Street Cats is in dire need of a new building. After a proposed deal on a new location fell through, they are now scrambling to find a place suitable for 223 rescue cats.
“I’m going to be really honest: no one does this because they love it; we do it because it needs to be done,” said executive director Lynne Scott. Scott said their three-year lease wasn’t renewed in December and time is running out.

“For most businesses, it’s a six-month process,” said Scott. “We have until the end of April to find a space, get a permit, make improvements and get moved in.”
Some of the requirements for the new building are a central location, parking, at least 3,000 square feet, air conditioning and windows. The rent needs to be less than $3,000 per month.
The nonprofit rescue has dozens of volunteers to help keep costs at a minimum.
“People abandon them, they throw them out — it’s just a case that we’re not causing the problem, we’re trying to resolve the problem,” said Allan Nepon, a volunteer and animal lover. Nepon is crossing his fingers for a better space.
“Hopefully we get a bigger building, not necessarily take more cats in but be able to take care of these a little better.”
