Winnipeg’s Filipino-Canadian community gathers for memorial service

WINNIPEG – The Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg joined together for a special memorial service Sunday afternoon.

A mass service was held in honour of the 44 police commandos who were killed in line of duty in the Philippines last week.

“It’s so far away from home and to have a service like this it shows our unity and our sympathy to the people that we have back home,” said Aida Champagne, president of the Filipino seniors group of Winnipeg.

The officers were killed while trying to catch a wanted Filipino terror suspect.

Many families and relatives are still in mourning.
