Drivers caught travelling 200 km/h on highway near Cochrane

CALGARY – Two young men are facing charges after allegedly driving up to 200km/h on a highway just west of Calgary.

RCMP stopped the pair on Sunday evening as they traveled on Highway 1A between Calgary and Cochrane.

Officers say they heard the sound of ‘racing motors’ and looked up to see two 2013 Toyota Scions driving towards them at an extremely high rate of speed.

Officers recorded both vehicles travelling up to 200km/h in a 100km/h zone.

“This is the second occurrence in the last week of young males driving at extremely high rates of speed on roadways just outside the City of Calgary,” said RCMP Sergeant Darrin Turnbull in a news release.

“Crashing at that speed, could have been catastrophic.”

“Speeding is one of the top priorities of the Integrated Traffic Units in Alberta and a common factor involved in 26% of serious injury and fatal collisions,” he added.

The drivers, a 21-year-old and a 26-year-old, are facing a handful of charges.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on March 27th.
