WINNIPEG – An idea to promote safety on mountains that started in Stony Mountain, Manitoba has turned into a national event.
Saturday marked the inaugural ski patrol day in Canada. Ski hills across Manitoba hosted events related to the day, such as scavenger hunts for kids wearing helmets.

“Stony Mountain is probably one of the smallest mountains in Canada,” said Robert Paige, who approached Canadain Ski Patrol with his idea three months ago. “I’m very proud to have it start here.”
Paige said Canadain Ski Patrol liked the idea to increase safety on ski hills and proposed it as a national event in January.
Every year from now on, the first Saturday of February will be national ski patrol day in Canada.
