REGINA – A Saskatchewan organization representing women’s shelters is asking people to boycott the movie Fifty Shades of Grey.
PATHS is joining the “#50DollarsNot50Shades” online campaign asking people to donate $50 to a domestic violence agency instead of seeing the movie, which is based on a popular book of the same name.
“The last thing we need is violence against women in media in general,” said Jo-Anne Dusel, PATHS provincial coordinator.

PATHS represents 19 agencies across Saskatchewan.
Dusel said the book makes it seem as if an unhealthy relationship represents some sort of romantic ideal.
“What we’re looking at is the way that he, the main character Christian Grey, intimidates, stalks, threatens, isolates and otherwise controls his romantic partner Anna,” said Dusel.

“This could be a very dangerous film for anyone who’s been abused, whether male or female. If they do (feel triggered by the movie), they should not hesitate to reach out for help.”
Other supporters of the campaign include the London Abused Women’s Centre and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.
