TORONTO – The union representing Ontario jail workers says two inmates at a Toronto detention centre have died in the past week.
Monte Vieselmeyer of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union says an inmate at the Toronto South Detention Centre died after an apparent suicide attempt on Thursday.

Vieselmeyer says another inmate at the new superjail died on Saturday after what appeared to be a drug overdose.
He says the jail has been under lockdown for roughly six days for a number of reasons, including the disappearance of a set of jail keys.

The coroner’s office is required to investigate deaths that occur in custody.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services could not immediately be reached for comment.
