Amazing photo of a weasel ‘riding’ a woodpecker goes viral

TORONTO – A British wildlife enthusiast and amateur photographer captured an amazing image of a small weasel on the back of green woodpecker mid-flight.

Photographer Martin Le-May snapped the image Monday afternoon while walking through an east-London park with his wife.

“I heard a distressed squawking noise and feared the worst,” Le-May told the BBC. “I soon realized it was a woodpecker with some kind of small mammal on its back.”

A small mammal indeed.

Apparently it was a fight or flight moment for the woodpecker as the furry little weasel was trying to make a meal out of the bird.

“This was a struggle for life,” the photographer explained to BirdGuides, a British birding and wildlife website. “The woodpecker landed in front of us and I feared the worst. I guess our presence, maybe 25 metres away, momentarily distracted the weasel.”

According to Le-May, the bird managed to escape the wrath of the small weasel.

The image became a hit on Twitter, while some questioned whether the image was a product of some fine Photoshopping skills, while others had some fun with Photoshop themselves.
