‘Insurgent’ tops weekend box office with $54M opening

TORONTO — The second chapter in the Divergent series topped the box office on its opening weekend, virtually matching the first movie’s debut.

Insurgent earned $54 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Divergent opened on the same weekend last year to $54.6 million.

Sean Penn’s The Gunman debuted to a disappointing $5 million and placed fourth. The weekend’s other new movie, Do You Believe was sixth with $4 million.

In its second weekend, Cinderella made $34.5 million and brought its worldwide total to $253 million. Run All Night, starring Liam Neeson, added $5 million and placed third.

In fifth place was Kingsman: The Secret Service, which is holding steady after more than a month. The Colin Firth action flick, which made another $4.6 million on the weekend, has made $295 million globally.

Rounding out the weekend top 10 are The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Focus, Chappie and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
