REGINA – Another traffic safety spotlight proved to be costly for motorists who were not willing to wear their seatbelt correctly in Saskatchewan. As a result, 452 tickets related to occupant restraints were issued in March.
Law enforcement paid particular attention to people not wearing seatbelts, those wearing them improperly, or not having child passengers properly restrained. Convicted motorists are fined $175 and lose three points on SGI’s safe driver recognition program.

Seatbelts can decrease the chances of sustaining serious injury in collisions by up to 50 per cent, according to SGI.
Additionally, police also issued 2,756 tickets for speeding/aggressive driving, 159 tickets for cellphone use and 131 impaired driving-related offences last month.
During March and June in 2014, provincial law enforcement participated in the same type of traffic spotlight, issuing 705 and 431 seatbelt violations respectively.
The April traffic spotlight in Saskatchewan has police focused on the safety of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
