CALGARY – Alberta’s Liberals have joined with other opposition parties in the provincial election campaign in promising to reduce mandatory school fees.
Liberal Leader David Swann says his party would put up $50 million to start phasing out the fees that he estimates cost parents $300 to $1,000 a year.

The province estimates the total cost of the fees at $92 million a year.

The Wildrose party has also promised to get rid of the fees, while the NDP has said it would get rid of fees for essentials such as busing and lunchroom supervision.
Swann says a Liberal government would also build schools as community hubs, and hire 1,500 more teachers and support staff to reduce class sizes.
Voters go to the polls May 5.
