MONCTON – A former Moncton teacher has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for sex crimes against a female student and for police obstruction.
William MacGillivray, who taught at Harrison Trimble High School, will serve two-and-a-half years in prison, minus 104 days credit for time spent in custody.

He was sentenced to 30 months for sexual exploitation, one year for child luring and six months for obstructing a peace officer. The judge ordered him to serve the sentences concurrently.
“Our teachers have an important role in our society and it’s important for them to obey the law,” said Justice Jean-Paul Ouellette.

The crown had asked for five years and the defence had asked for 18 months. Ouellette said he was giving a sentence midway between the two, in consideration of the fact that MacGillivray was in a position of trust and the sentence had to denounce the crime.
