“Such a tragic end to a short life”: Disbelief over death of Regina teen

REGINA – A small memorial alongside a creek in Regina’s east end is the only sign of where a frantic rescue transpired the day before.

The death of 14-year-old Haven Dubois, who was pulled from Pilot Butte Creek Wednesday, has left an entire community in disbelief.

Police determined the boy’s death is non-criminal in nature but neighbours are struggling to come to grips with such a tragedy unfolding in their backyard.

“It really pulls at your heart strings you know. It’s such a tragic end to a short life,” said Dale Lakeman.

Around 12:30 p.m Wednesday, police were called to Fines Drive and Coleman Crescent after hearing of a body in the creek.

Paramedics attempted to revive the teen on scene before transporting him to hospital where he was pronounced dead around an hour after being pulled from the water.

Teira Millham lives just a block away and says the creek is a popular place for kids, and just a few blocks from the school where Dubois studied.

According to Regina Public Schools, in these situations guidance counselors are made available to both students and staff.

Now many parents are questioning whether fence or signage should be put in place around the creek.

“I always tell my kids to get away from there, but really they should have something to block that off,” Millham added.

The water appears rather shallow where the teen was located, but is quite muddy.

“If you fell in there, it would be hard to get out,” said Lakeman.  “It’s like quicksand.”

But those questions may be premature, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Dubois’ death.
