Calgary Fire Department rescues woman from capsized raft

WATCH: A group of six people were rescued from the Bow River on Sunday after their raft hit an abutment of a pedestrian bridge. Jill Croteau reports.

CALGARY – Firefighters were able to rescue a woman whose raft had capsized on the Bow River on Sunday night.

It happened just before 7 p.m. in Edworthy Park.

The Calgary Fire Department says the inflatable raft had been carrying six people when it collided with the abutment of a pedestrian bridge while floating downstream. Five of the people on board were able to swim to shore, but a sixth was stranded.

When they arrived, the Calgary Fire Department’s Aquatics Team found the woman clinging to the raft which remained pinned against the abutment.

Firefighters lowered a rope to the woman to help her secure the raft while they prepared to rappel down to save her. Crews were eventually able to get the woman safely aboard a boat to carry her to shore.

The victim, a woman in her twenties, was treated by EMS and transported to the hospital.

All of the people involved were wearing life vests.
