SASKATOON – Someone pretending to represent the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is putting a scare into some people. Saskatoon police say they have received around 20 complaints in recent days about the fraudulent calls.
The caller claims to be from the agency and that taxes are owed. Threatening or aggressive language is then used to frighten people into paying the fictitious debt, with the fraudster demanding payments be made by either credit card or money transfer.

According to the CRA, the caller also threatens the taxpayer with court charges, jail or deportation if the payment is not made.

Officials with CRA say they have established procedures in place to ensure personal information is protected. The authenticity of a call can also be confirmed by calling the CRA.
Police are recommending anyone receiving a similar call should hang up and then report the call to them online or with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
