Teacher holds fundraiser for family after Winnipeg teen drowned

WINNIPEG – A Gordon Bell High School teacher has started a fundraising campaign for the family of a student who died Saturday near Kenora, Ont.

Nishan Chamlagai, 17, drowned while swimming in Lake of the Woods at Anicinabe Park on Saturday. His family, recent immigrants from Nepal, is struggling to pay the costs associated with Chamlagai’s death, Kevin Banks says on the gofundme page created Thursday.

The goal of the page is to raise $8,000 for the funeral expenses. More than $2,500 had been raised by 9 a.m. Friday.

The Chamlagais came to Canada from Nepal in 2012, the gofundme page says.

“Nishan was always a pleasure to have in the classroom and around the school,” Banks wrote. “He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all of us at Gordon Bell.”
