Alcohol believed to be a factor in fatal collision west of Edmonton

EDMONTON — A man in his 40s is dead following a two-vehicle collision west of Edmonton early Sunday morning.

RCMP were called to the crash on Highway 627 and Golden Spike Road at around 4 a.m.

Police said a Nissan Pathfinder crossed the highway into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Dodge Ram truck.

The driver of the Pathfinder, a 45-year-old man from Parkland County, was killed in the collision.

The driver of the truck, a 28-year-old from Leduc, was taken to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Spruce Grove RCMP believe alcohol was a factor.

Highway 627 was shut down in both directions between Golden Spike Road and Range Road 274 for several hours Sunday morning. It reopened around 11:45 a.m.
