5 years later, police request public’s assistance in Varaschin homicide

TORONTO — It’s been nearly five years since the death of Sonia Varaschin and police are reaching out to the public for any clues that could lead them to a suspect.

The 42-year-old went missing on Aug. 30 2010.

Her body was found six days later in a wooded area, off of Beechgrove Sideroad.

“I take it one day at a time,” said Sonia’s mother, Michelle Varaschin. “It’s not easy because I don’t get no answers.”

In a statement, Detective Inspector Glassford said the public has been very actively involved in the investigation.

“We have received over 1000 tips and believe that this murder will be solved with a key piece of information that comes from a person within the community. No matter how small the information, each and every tip has and will continue to be thoroughly investigated.”

“I don’t know how she died. I don’t know nothing…the only thing I know is where they found her body,” her mother said. “You better believe I’m frustrated. I believe I have the right to know how she died.”

A $50,000 reward is being offered in place for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of any individuals involved in the murder.

“These viable options remain available for providing additional information that may help to identify and bring Sonia’s killer to justice,” the statement said.
