First day of training camp brings praise for P.K. Subban

BROSSARD – The Montreal Canadiens are gathering once again at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard for the 2015-16 training camp.

Day one included fitness tests, physical and medical exams and photo ops.

Although players were excited to be back at their practice facility and anxious to get camp started, the talk of P.K. Subban‘s big announcement was still on everyone’s mind.

“It’s an amazing thing what he’s doing,” said Canadiens forward and Greenfield Park native Torrey Mitchell.

“He’s obviously got a major impact on this community and it’s pretty impressive what he’s doing.”

On Wednesday, Subban announced that he would be donating $10 million to the Montreal Children’s Hospital over the next seven years.

The hockey star’s commitment has carved him a spot in history books, making it the largest donation ever by a Canadian athlete.

“It’s a pretty nice thing for him to do,” said free agent Tomas Fleischmann.

Not only are Subban’s teammates singing his praises, so are politicians.

Quebec’s Health Minister Gaétan Barrette said he’s impressed by the athlete’s generous donation.

“To me, this is clearly a positive and has to be underlined in all the ways possible,” he said.

Subban’s teammate, Nathan Beaulieu also echoed Barrette’s thoughts.

He said Subban sets a great example for himself and the rest of the guys in the locker room.

“For him to step up like that and donate all that, not just money but his time,” he said.

As Subban and his teammates prepare to hit the ice and take on a brand new season, it’s evident his commitment off the ice is one that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
