New outdoor amphitheatre planned for Parc Jean-Drapeau

MONTREAL – Parc Jean-Drapeau is getting a major facelift.

Mayor Denis Coderre made the announcement Friday alongside  the minister responsible for Montreal, Robert Poeti. The plan is to develop the western portion of Ile Ste-Hélène.

“It’s time we rehabilitate Parc Jean-Drapeau,” Coderre told reporters from an outside podium at the park.

“It’s a mythic place, a place where nature, history, festivities blend together.”

One of the major projects is to build a 65,000  seat amphitheatre to accommodate concerts and other cultural events.

The natural amphitheatre will feature a high quality sound system and will be designed to host events throughout all four seasons.

Other features of the park will include a new promenade along the St. Lawrence River featuring a spectacular view of the river and the city.

A new central walkway will also be created making access between the different attractions on the island easier to reach. It will link the metro station, the Biosphere and the Cosmos Bridge together.

The project will cost  just over $70 million and will be shared equally between the province and the city.

Groundbreaking is expected to take place in the fall of 2016.
