Nurse who suffered late complication from Ebola released from hospital

London’s Royal Free Hospital says it has discharged Scottish nurse Pauline Cafferkey, who was hospitalized last month after suffering from a rare relapse of Ebola.

Cafferkey was treated for meningitis that developed as a result of lingering Ebola in her system. Now free from Ebola, she was transferred to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. The hospital said Thursday she is stable.

Cafferkey was diagnosed with Ebola after returning from Sierra Leone and first discharged from the Royal Free in January. But she suffered a late complication and returned to its specialist unit.

Scientists say it is possible for the Ebola virus to remain in the body for months, even after patients have recovered. Thousands of Ebola survivors in West Africa are suffering from long-term side-effects of the disease.
