Cavanagh’s parents said they were disappointed by the outcome, adding they wanted their son’s killer sentenced as an adult so that he would have a criminal record.
The police investigation took three years and, in the end, two men were charged.
Salim Kaddoura was facing manslaughter charges and fled the country. He was arrested on his return to Canada in 2013. He pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder and received a four year sentence.
MM was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2012, but the decision was overturned in an appeal.
A date for sentencing will be set on Feb. 5, 2016.
