SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon says as snow becomes more frequent, so too will coyotes sightings. A safety reminder was issued Tuesday, advising people that it’s usual for this time of year for more of the animals to be spotted.
Coyotes are more commonly seen in the winter and the city’s expansion and green spaces have resulted in more sightings, according to officials.

People are asked to keep their distance from all wildlife as the animals may act unpredictably.
In case of a close encounter, here’s what the city says people should do:
- Never approach the animal;
- Be observant of the coyote’s movement;
- Act assertive, yell, and wave your arms;
- Ensure the animal has enough space to flee the situation.
Coyotes can be seen in residential and commercial areas. To avoid an encounter in yards, people can avoid leaving food in accessible areas, seal off decks and ensure fences and gates are in good condition.
