EDMONTON – The Edmonton Oilers have placed defenceman Mark Fayne on waivers.

The defenceman would be sent to the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors if he clears.

Fayne is in the second season of a US$14.5-million, four-year contract that carries a $3.625-million cap hit.

The 28-year-old could join fellow big-money defenceman Nikita Nikitin and goaltender Ben Scrivens in the minors.

If that happens, Fayne would still count $2.675 million against Edmonton’s salary cap while in Bakersfield.

Fayne has just one assist in 24 games this season for the Oilers, who are tied for the fewest points in the NHL.
