Several people have been left temporarily homeless just before Christmas after an early morning fire in Surrey.

But all five residents did manage to escape from their home safely thanks to two working smoke alarms.

Firefighters arrived at 126th Street and 90th Avenue just before 1 a.m. to find heavy smoke pouring from the back of the home.

“The residents were actually awakened by the smoke alarm,” Battalion Chief Reo Jerome told Global News.

Jerome says the fire started in the rear of the residence, between the first and the second floor, making it difficult for crews to access.

There is extensive smoke and water damage to the building, but it is not gutted.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze.
