Cleaning up after the holidays in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – As people begin to clear out the Christmas clutter, the City of Saskatoon has some tips for reducing waste. Cardboard, foil, cookie tins and most wrapping paper can be taken to the curb as recycling.

After celebrating the holidays with his family, Scott McDonald dropped off his natural Christmas tree at one of the city’s six composting sites.

“It’s nice to see these things recycled as part of our city landscaping program, as opposed to buying an artificial tree that’s going to just fill a landfill,” McDonald said.

Until Jan. 31, unwrapped and unbound trees can be left at the following locations:

  • Primrose Drive Recycling Depot;
  • Lowe Road Recycling Depot;
  • Wildwood Golf Course parking lot;
  • George Ward Pool parking lot;
  • Doukhobor Cultural Society of Saskatchewan parking lot;
  • Meadowgreen Recycling Depot.

Old electronics can be brought to a number of recycling services around the city. Many big box stores will also accept old batteries and electronics.

“Technology products … have some really particular parts or materials that go into making them. Also, things like light bulbs have lots of mercury in them,” said Kyle Toms, computer department manager at London Drugs.

Switching from disposable to reusable batteries can help reduce waste and save money, Toms added.

Packaging for expensive items should be discreetly recycled, according to the RCMP. Boxes that once held big-screen TVs or computers can alert thieves of new products to steal.

The City of Saskatoon switches to its new garbage and recycling collection schedule Jan. 4.
