CALGARY – Assault charges against a Calgary man accused of killing his wife were stayed Monday.

James Christians is charged with the first-degree murder of his estranged wife, Carmel Christians.

Two counts of assault and one count of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm have been stayed.

The Crown said there is no reasonable likelihood of conviction given the victim is now dead.

Six weeks before the 55-year-old mother was murdered, she told a judge she worried James would kill her. At that time, she was granted an emergency protection order.
