TORONTO – The Toronto Zoo’s panda cubs are popular with the general public, but the zoo is now pushing for official recognition.
The as-yet-unnamed twins are among the nominees in the 2015 Giant Panda Global Awards, in the prestigious category of Panda Cub of the Year.
The awards are doled out by the website GiantPandaGlobal.com, which aims to “reward organizations and individuals that make a difference in panda conservation.”
The twins their mother Er Shun are nominated in other categories, as is the zoo’s panda keeper and interpretive centre.

The twins are the first panda cubs born in Canada, and a major coup for the Toronto Zoo; pandas are notoriously difficult to breed, as the females are only receptive during a single 24- to 72-hour window each year.
They turned 100 days old just days ago, and are thriving in their enclosure, zoo officials say. The zoo hopes to introduce the cubs to the public with a coming-out party in mid-March.
Online voting closes on February 3.
