Federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair wants Ottawa to cough up cities funding plan

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair wants the federal government to reveal its plans for funding cities. 

Mulcair told the Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting in Saskatoon that municipalities have a $123-billion infrastructure deficit. 

Federation president Berry Vrbanovic says the mayors are anxious to hear from federal Infrastructure Minister Denis Lebel because cities need funding clarity to make budget plans.

Vrbanovic says municipalities need more money since they currently receive only eight cents of every tax dollar. 

Mulcair got a rocky reception from some western mayors. 

The mayor of Spruce Grove, Alta., demanded Mulcair – quote – “stop taking shots at the Alberta oil industry” because it isn’t winning him any “brownie points” in Western Canada.
