Winnipeg – A group of Winnipeg community leaders and activists is hoping an open discussion about racism in the health care system will bring change.

13 Fires Winnipeg is a grassroots group that holds monthly discussions around the city on issues that are intertwined with racism.

On Saturday, the talk focused on how racism affects the physical and mental health of the people who experience it and also if it affects how people interact with the health care system.

“We also see it at a structural level in terms of the system and the way it disproportionately responds to different groups in society,” said organizer Darrien Morton.

The first 13 Fires Winnipeg talk happened last month with a discussion focusing on racism and poverty.

13 Fires Winnipeg was formed after a local summit about racial inclusion that took place in September, 2015.
